Starting your Yoga journey
Yoga's history is deeper than you think.
Yoga has a long and rich history that began thousands of years ago in ancient India. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj,” which means to unite or to join.
Traditionally, yoga was developed as a way to connect the body, mind, and spirit.
Some of the earliest ideas about yoga appear in ancient Indian texts called the Vedas, which were written more than 3,000 years ago. Over time, yoga evolved and was later organised into a clearer system by the sage Patanjali, who wrote the famous text Yoga Sutras of Patanjali around 2,000 years ago. This text describes the philosophy and principles of yoga, including meditation, breathing, and ethical living.
In its early form, yoga focused mainly on meditation and spiritual development, rather than physical exercise. The physical postures (called asanas) that many people practice today developed later, particularly through the traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, and other Indian spiritual practices.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, yoga began spreading to the Western world through teachers such as Swami Vivekananda, who introduced yoga philosophy to audiences in Europe and America. Since then, yoga has grown into a popular global practice focused on health, relaxation, and wellbeing, while still maintaining its deep cultural and spiritual roots.
Today, millions of people practice yoga around the world as a way to improve flexibility, reduce stress, strengthen the body, and create balance in daily life.
People start yoga for many different reasons, but most are looking to improve their health, wellbeing, and balance in everyday life.

Yoga helps to increase flexibility, build strength, and improve posture through gentle movements and stretches. It also focuses on breathing and relaxation, which can help reduce stress, calm the mind, and improve sleep.
-
Many beginners enjoy yoga because it is accessible to everyone. You don’t need to be flexible or experienced to start. Yoga simply encourages you to move at your own pace, listen to your body, and take time for yourself.
-
Over time, regular practice can help you feel stronger, more relaxed, and more connected to your body and mind.
At Santosha Studio we offer monthly beginners workshops to help you step onto the mat and welcome you to the studio for the first time.
